How to get into the information security field

You don’t necessarily need formal technical training to break into the information security field. Experience and education from different backgrounds can often be an asset when applying for jobs. Here’s how you can learn more about information security and gain practical experience without starting your education or career from scratch.

How can I transition into the information security field with no technical training?

  • Attend information security related events, such as U of T’s Coffee with the CISO sessions.
  • Enrol in information security training, such as the Cybersecurity Boot Camp program offered by U of T’s School of Continuing Studies.
  • Research information security-related jobs that interest you and explore related online resources, education and events.

How can I get into the field if I have no experience?

  • Join experiential opportunities like capture the flag events.
  • Engage in practical work experiences like co-ops and internships.
  • Find mentors from the industry through networking events or simply cold calling them.
  • Get involved with U of T’s information security team by contributing to Information Security Council working groups.

Who can succeed in the information security field?

  • People who are creative, motivated, inquisitive and have a genuine interest in information security.
  • Another bonus is having good interpersonal skills, such as communication and adaptability.
