Traveler’s safety checklist
Plan ahead
- Pack / upload only the research files you truly need.
- Use a dedicated travel laptop or phone if possible.
- Register your trip through U of T’s partnership with International SOS if you are a student.
- Consult the Government of Canada Travel Advisories for guidance on your destination.
- Review local laws and import / export restrictions relevant to your research area.
Stay aware
- Recognize which elements of your research could draw unwanted interest.
- Be mindful in casual conversations, share only what’s appropriate.
- Think twice before posting updates about your trip or research online.
Protect devices
- Always keep electronic devices in your possession.
- Avoid connecting your devices to unknown Wi-Fi or Bluetooth sources, use your phone as a hotspot if needed.
- Turn off automatic connection capabilities to avoid having your devices connect or pair automatically with unsecure networks.
- Use strong passwords and a trusted password manager.
- Use only your personal charger and avoid plugging devices into shared or public USB ports.
Keep your network safe
- Be aware that you’re a link to your colleagues and partners.
- Report any suspicious requests or phishing attempts to U of T’s Information Security Team.
- After travel: change your passwords, run antivirus scans, and wipe your devices if possible.
